ESD is the sudden transfer of an electrical charge between two objects at different potentials.
ESD is a prevalent and dangerous problem affecting modern electronic parts and systems. It is estimated that ESD accounts for losses over $40 billion worldwide each year.
One example of ESD occurs when you walk across a carpet (while wearing shoes) and touch a conductive object, such as a metal doorknob. The "Zap" that you feel and hear is a form of ESD.
